5 Tips for Maintaining a Work-Life Balance
Working a job is not as straightforward as it used to be. You used to have a daily routine to stick to. Now, with the world of freelancing becoming more popular, people aren't working on that 9 to 5 grind anymore. In fact, a large portion of my generation is working remotely as they travel and the world. We are the wandering working generation.
Sounds like a dream come true right? Well, with all of that working freedom comes a lot of stress as well. It can become hard to find that balance between work and play when you don't have a set routine. Some people get sucked into work and lose track of time. They become all work. Others get so wrapped up in the adventure of their lifestyle that they forget to get important things done. They become all play. I myself catch myself sleeping in on a Monday morning and binge-watching Netflix until I realize that my day is almost over and I accomplished nothing. That is why I think it is so super important for you to figure out what things are important to you and what you want to see in your daily life.
Here are my 5 daily checkpoints for keeping a work-life balance:
1. Exercise
I really do have a love-hate relationship with working out. I love to look and feel good. I mean let's face it, there is nothing better than looking in the mirror in your favorite pair of jeans and feeling genuinely good about yourself. But I hate cardio. I really do. I just haven't found that one exercise that makes it fun for me I guess. But no matter my lack of motivation, a daily workout is an absolute must-do for me!

2. Nutrition
By now you all know about my food addiction. I would love nothing more than to eat my way around the world. But, keeping a balance in my daily meals is really important for me. Sometimes I get really wrapped up in work or studying and I'll skip a meal. That is a big no no! You have to make sure that you are fueling your body with the nutrients it needs on a daily basis!
3. Work
Duh. This is the obvious big one. I mean this whole blog is about maintaining a work-life balance. But the way that I have started to manage my work is through to-do lists. I have to make sure to juggle my business, law school classes, and social media. The best way for me to do that is by writing down everything that needs to be done in the next week and making myself a daily list. Like today on my list I have: write the blog, research criminal proceedings for essay #1, reply to work emails, finalize pictures for the new campaign, contact hotel manager, and learn chapter 1 flashcards. That list alone helps me keep my thoughts organized and keeps me from over or under working. Once the list is done, work is done!
4. Play
This is not only a way to manage your stress but also a way to keep yourself social. When it comes to unwinding, my glass of wine and bubble bath are always ready to help! But I am horribly bad about staying social. I mean seriously, I get so stressed out that I become more antisocial than a grumpy cat. So I sometimes I have to push myself to go out and have some actual human interaction because it is something that I know my brain needs to unwind. By keeping it on your list you remind yourself that it is not only okay but it is important to have some fun every day!
5. Life Purpose
Okay so this is a little bit odd but it is something that my boyfriend started doing a couple of months ago and I think it is actually really helpful. Have your goals written somewhere where you see them every day! He writes them on a whiteboard while I have them on sticky notes on my bathroom mirror. Just write down some little daily mantras or reminders as to what you are working towards and what you want to accomplish in life. It really helps you get through days when you just can't seem to stay balanced!
Now following my daily reminders isn't a guarantee that you will suddenly have the perfect balanced life. That isn't something that just happens! Trust me, I am still figuring it out too. But no matter what just remember that you are working hard everyday to make this life one you want to be living. So cheers to all of you and your dreams!
